History and environment of La Ferme de Julie

This old farm was occupied by Julie Alech and her son Marcel until the 1990s.

The water of the city (source of the Couagne) arrived at an angle of the kitchen, where there was the meter and a tap, without any distribution of water or sanitation. The kitchen, the living room and the two upstairs bedrooms were supplied with electricity by simple twisted wires. In the kitchen, there was a small low cast iron stove, that was the only source of heating and it was used to cook all year round..

This building has never been "distorted" by modern work, the restoration has respected ancient principles or environmentally friendly processes.

The facade has been recreated with a lime plaster, to regain the old look and let the walls breathe. The interior coatings are therefore also based on lime as well as paint. The partitions are not plasterboard, but in Fermacell, that is pure gypsum, without any additives..

As an isolation there is nowhere used a glass wool. In ceiling of the rooms and the walls, there is used only a wood wall (brands Hometherm and Stecco). The lime renders of the rooms have been prepared with a mixture of hemp straw.

Pour le chauffage (et l’eau chaude), for heating and hot water heating, taking into account the interrupted occupancy of the house, electric heating was retained.

In ground floor, kitchen and living room, there is basic floor heating and radiant convector heaters. The stable temperature of the mass of vaults, the walls and the soil, participates in the comfort of the rooms ; the confort can be improved by the wood heating in the fireplace of the living room.

Upstairs, bedrooms and bathroom, are heated by radiant convectors and towel radiator. All power supplies are distributed by armored sheath with grounding, therefor there is no electric radiation, since there is no underfloor heating.

The kitchen is provided by hob and electric oven.

Phone and electrical lines that are brought to the farm were placed underground to avoid disturbing of the landscape. A MV / LV transformer is 50 m far from the farm, the mobile phone antenna is around 100 m far.

As the crow flies, the nearest houses are 250 meters away.
